Las v\u00edas reguladoras de los genes que controlan la funci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas madre embrionarias se encuentran tambi\u00e9n en algunas poblaciones de c\u00e9lulas madre adultas. Aunque la importancia de los estr\u00f3genos en el desarrollo de la gl\u00e1ndula mamaria y del c\u00e1ncer de mama est\u00e1 bien documentada, la influencia del estr\u00f3geno en la poblaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas madre no se ha evaluado. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo explorar la posibilidad de que los genes de c\u00e9lulas madre embrionarias nanog, oct4 y sox2 puedan ser relevantes para la poblaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas madre de la gl\u00e1ndula mamaria e investigar el papel del estr\u00f3geno en las c\u00e9lulas madre. Muestras de tejido mamario normal, de tumores en distintos grados y del tejido normal adyacente, as\u00ed como c\u00e9lulas mcf-7 de c\u00e1ncer de mama, fueron utilizadas para este estudio. Las c\u00e9lulas de la gl\u00e1ndula mamaria se cultivaron como mamoesferas en la presencia de hormonas y poblaciones de c\u00e9lulas madre fueron aisladas mediante facs. El estr\u00f3geno disminuy\u00f3 el n\u00famero de c\u00e9lulas madre en la gl\u00e1ndula mamaria normal y en muestras cancer\u00edgenas. Las c\u00e9lulas madre aisladas tanto en tejidos normales como tumorales mostraron una mayor expresi\u00f3n de nanog, oct4 y sox2. La expresi\u00f3n de estos genes fue mayor en las poblaciones de c\u00e9lulas madre que en las c\u00e9lulas m\u00e1s diferenciadas, y m\u00e1s elevada en c\u00e9lulas tumorales que en c\u00e9lulas normales. Por otro lado, la sobre-expresi\u00f3n de cada uno de estos factores de transcripci\u00f3n en c\u00e9lulas mcf-7 redujo la expresi\u00f3n del receptor de estr\u00f3geno y elev\u00f3 el n\u00famero de las c\u00e9lulas madre y su capacidad de invasi\u00f3n.  las c\u00e9lulas madre embrionarias y las c\u00e9lulas madre de la mama, tanto normales como tumorales, podr\u00edan utilizar los mismos genes para mantener una poblaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas madre. Este estudio demuestra que el estr\u00f3geno reduce el tama\u00f1o de la poblaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas madre y sugiere que nanog, oct4 y sox2 pueden servir como marcadores diagn\u00f3sticos de
