En estas estructuras su caracter dipolar tiene incidencia en su quimica y el estudio se ha centrado en betainas aciclicas con caracter dipolar y en betainas macrociclicas con caracter cuadrupolar.  dentro de las aciclicas se han seleccionado las sales internas de azolato piridinio e imidazolio con un espaciador metileno y etileno, observandose para el caso de los compuestos con un centro metileno captodativo una oxidacion espontanea sobre el carbono que une los dos grupos funcionales no clasicos, mientras que en las betainas con un etileno interanular se observa una reaccion de eliminacion. Para la sintesis de las betainas macro ciclicas se han considerado como bloques fundamentales las sales internas de triazolato piridinio e imidazolio con un espaciador metileno y xileno para obtener (14), (16) y (18) heterofanos con nucleos heteroaromaticos cationicos y anionicos en una disposicion alternada.  de estos sistemas macrociclicos se ha realizado un estudio preliminar de agregacion y
