Los altos niveles de iluminaci\u00f3n algunas veces necesarios para contemplar una obra de arte adecuadamente pueden causar da\u00f1o irreversible a sus materiales. La capacidad de los materiales para absorber o reflejar la luz necesita ser determinada debido a que el grado de deterioro depender\u00e1 de la naturaleza qu\u00edmica y f\u00edsica de cada objeto. Los materiales sensibles a la luz que encontramos con frecuencia en las colecciones de los museos generalmente incluyen textiles, documentos y obra gr\u00e1fica. La complejidad de los efectos da\u00f1inos de la luz sobre las colecciones ha ocasionado que el n\u00famero de instituciones interesadas en estudiar estos fen\u00f3menos haya incrementado en los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os.  esta tesis doctoral se ha centrado en el estudio de los efectos de la luz sobre los materiales t\u00edpicamente encontrados en las colecciones de museos desde puntos de vista macrosc\u00f3pico y microsc\u00f3pico. La decoloraci\u00f3n causada por altos niveles de luz incidentes sobre la superficie de un objeto puede ser detectada a simple vista. Estos efectos de degradaci\u00f3n pueden a su vez ser identificados y cuantificados a nivel microsc\u00f3pico mediante la utilizaci\u00f3n de m\u00e9todos anal\u00edticos. Este estudio ha prove\u00eddo la oportunidad de utilizar un museo recientemente renovado para un estudio de campo que ha servido para cuantificar y entender el comportamiento de la luz en sus espacios de exposici\u00f3n. El edificio seleccionado ha sido la antigua oficina de patentes de washington dc. Dicho edificio, hoy llamado centro donald w. Reynolds para el arte americano y el retrato, ha sido renovado durante seis a\u00f1os y fue reabierto al p\u00fablico en el a\u00f1o 2006. El espacio es compartido entre dos museos del instituto smithsonian: el museo de arte americano y la galeria nacional de retratos.           el proyecto ha consistido de dos principales l\u00edneas de investigaci\u00f3n. Primero, una evaluaci\u00f3n de los niveles de luz en diversas \u00e1reas de exhibici\u00f3n del museo antes mencionado. Segundo, un estudio t\u00e9cnico sobre la decoloraci\u00f3n de materiales presentes en una serie de muestras de laboratorio y objetos de museo. El estudio ha demostrado la necesidad de evaluar los niveles de luz en un museo y conjuntamente determinar la cantidad de da\u00f1o que la luz es capaz de provocar sobre los materiales que conforman
