Una forma especial de malaria es la asociada al embarazo, que se caracteriza por la acumulaci\u00f3n de eritrocitos infectados en la placenta, y que puede llegar a causar hasta 200.000 muertes maternoinfantiles cada a\u00f1o. El objetivo de este trabajo es describir como esta forma peculiar de malaria ha afectado la variaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica humana. Con esta finalidad, hemos utilizado m\u00e9todos tanto de la gen\u00e9tica evolutiva como de la epidemiolog\u00eda molecular, resultando en la primera investigaci\u00f3n a gran escala de la base gen\u00e9tica de la malaria placentaria. Los resultados ofrecen una nueva visi\u00f3n sobre los genes que modulan el riesgo de infecci\u00f3n, as\u00ed como de la selecci\u00f3n natural actuando sobre las v\u00edas celulares implicadas en la patog\u00e9nesis de la enfermedad.
