La preparaci\u00f3n experimental incluye la implantaci\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica de electrodos de registro (electromiograf\u00eda) y de estimulaci\u00f3n (en el nervio trig\u00e9mino), as\u00ed como la implantaci\u00f3n de electrodos en el hipocampo para el registro de potenciales evocados en la sinapsis hipocampal ca3-ca1. Dicha preparaci\u00f3n le ha permitido, entre otras cosas, inducir ltp (potenciaci\u00f3n a largo plazo) in vivo, lo cual s\u00f3lo se hab\u00eda llevado a cabo en estudios in vitro. Adem\u00e1s, como paradigma de aprendizaje asociativo ha usado el condicionamiento cl\u00e1sico del reflejo palpebral, en cuya adquisici\u00f3n y extinci\u00f3n est\u00e1 involucrado el hipocampo.  los resultados obtenidos han demostrado que el hipocampo participa en la adquisici\u00f3n del condicionamiento cl\u00e1sico del reflejo palpebral, y que su sinapsis ca3-ca1 se potencia durante el aprendizaje. Adem\u00e1s, mecanismos tanto pre- como postsin\u00e1pticos tienen lugar en esta sinapsis durante el condicionamiento. Ejemplos de factores presin\u00e1pticos que contribuyen a la adquisici\u00f3n del aprendizaje son el receptor de adenosina a2a y el receptor cannabinoide cb1. Un ejemplo de factor postsin\u00e1ptico involucrado en la adquisici\u00f3n y el almacenamiento de nuevas habilidades motoras es la enzima  pkm\u00c2\u00bf, que puede ser selectivamente regulada por el p\u00e9ptido zip. Dichos resultados tambi\u00e9n han demostrado una relaci\u00f3n funcional entre la potenciaci\u00f3n a largo plazo inducida experimentalmente en la sinapsis ca3-ca1 del hipocampo y los cambios en la
