Una de sus principales funciones es la destoxificaci\u00f3n y biotransformaci\u00f3n de una gran variedad de sustancias con estructuras qu\u00edmicas diferentes, denominados compuestos colef\u00edlicos. Algunos de ellos son end\u00f3genos, como los \u00e1cidos biliares y pigmentos biliares hemoderivados, mientras que otros muchos son xenobi\u00f3ticos. Los procesos de transporte en el hepatocito desempe\u00f1an un papel fundamental en la captaci\u00f3n hep\u00e1tica de una gran cantidad de sustratos, ya que muchos de ellos se encuentran en su forma ionizada a ph fisiol\u00f3gico. En esta forma la difusi\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de las membranas lip\u00eddicas se dificulta; por lo que se hace necesaria la participaci\u00f3n de transportadores espec\u00edficos de membrana. Concretamente la superfamilia slc, compuesta por m\u00e1s de 300 transportadores, juega un papel clave en la captaci\u00f3n de sustratos muy diversos, desde iones inorg\u00e1nicos a mol\u00e9culas org\u00e1nicas cati\u00f3nicas, ani\u00f3nicas o neutras. Estas prote\u00ednas son capaces de transportar, adem\u00e1s, f\u00e1rmacos citost\u00e1ticos por similitud estructural con otros sustratos. Sin embargo, y a pesar del inter\u00e9s de estos transportadores en las \u00e1reas de fisiolog\u00eda, fisiopatolog\u00eda y farmacolog\u00eda, para muchos de los miembros de esta familia se desconoce
