Est\u00e1 constituida por la terminaci\u00f3n de un ax\u00f3n, que se ensancha para formar el bot\u00f3n presin\u00e1ptico, el cual se encuentra en aposici\u00f3n a la membrana del cuerpo celular o de una dendrita de otra neurona; esta regi\u00f3n recibe el nombre de regi\u00f3n postsin\u00e1ptica. Entre la membrana presin\u00e1ptica y la postsin\u00e1ptica existe un espacio denominado hendidura sin\u00e1ptica que tiene una anchura de 20 a 50nm. En la mayor parte de las sinapsis (sinapsis qu\u00edmicas) la comunicaci\u00f3n entre neuronas se realiza a trav\u00e9s de sustancias qu\u00edmicas llamadas neurotransmisores. los neurotransmisores se almacenan en ves\u00edculas en el terminal nervioso y son liberados por la fusi\u00f3n de estas ves\u00edculas sin\u00e1pticas con la membrana plasm\u00e1tica en una regi\u00f3n especializada llamada zona activa. Este proceso de fusi\u00f3n es dependiente de calcio y se halla acoplado a la entrada de este cati\u00f3n a trav\u00e9s de los canales dependientes de voltaje. La liberaci\u00f3n de neurotransmisores responde, por tanto, a la despolarizaci\u00f3n de la membrana plasm\u00e1tica y termina cuando desaparece el ca2+ de las zonas activas. Los neurotransmisores pueden ser excitadores como el glutamato o inhibidores como el gaba o la glicina. Los neurotransmisores excitadores producen la despolarizaci\u00f3n de la neurona postsin\u00e1ptica al aumentar la permeabilidad para na+, mientras que los inhibidores generan un potencial postsin\u00e1ptico inhibidor, es decir, hiperpolarizan la neurona, al aumentar selectivamente la permeabilidad para cl-. La neurona integra se\u00f1ales excitadoras e inhibidoras de forma que si la suma resultante de todos los efectos sobrepasa el umbral de excitaci\u00f3n, \u00e9sta genera un potencial de acci\u00f3n. No obstante, un determinado neurotransmisor puede ejercer simult\u00e1neamente funciones excitadoras, inhibidoras o moduladoras de las anteriores.
