En estas c\u00e9lulas, el zinc se libera junto con el neurotransmisor y act\u00faa como neuromodulador de la sinapsis. La p\u00e9rdida de la homeostasis de zinc en el cerebro conlleva alteraciones en el comportamiento, el aprendizaje, la expresi\u00f3n de las emociones y las operaciones cognitivas. Adem\u00e1s, el zinc est\u00e1 implicado en procesos que abarcan desde la neuromodulaci\u00f3n, apoptosis, necrosis o plasticidad sin\u00e1ptica hasta el desarrollo de enfermedades neurodegenerativas, como el alzheimer y el parkinson. el estudio detallado del sistema modulador zinc\u00e9rgico en el bulbo olfatorio de ratones, en condiciones normales y en condiciones experimentales de neurodegeneraci\u00f3n descubre una nueva faceta del bulbo olfatorio, como una estructura zinc\u00e9rgica aut\u00f3noma con una capacidad pl\u00e1stica heterog\u00e9nea seg\u00fan su localizaci\u00f3n y una regulaci\u00f3n especial, dependiente de \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico. Adem\u00e1s, posee un sistema astroglial, dedicado probablemente a la eliminaci\u00f3n del zinc extracelular, que refleja el paralelismo entre la homeostasis de zinc que se lleva a cabo en el bulbo olfatorio y otras estructuras tradicionalmente zinc\u00e9rgicas, como el hipocampo.
