Los receptores p2 fueron agrupados en dos grandes familias,  p2x y p2y. Los receptores p2x son canales i\u00f3nicos activados por atp y en mam\u00edferos se han caracterizado 7 subtipos (p2x1-7). Por su parte, los receptores metabotr\u00f3picos p2y son acoplados a prote\u00ednas g y a la fecha se han clonado 8 subunidades (p2y1, 2,4,6,11,12,13,14). Los receptores p1 y p2, solos o en combinaci\u00f3n, son expresados en pr\u00e1cticamente todas las c\u00e9lulas vivas y median una considerable variedad de funciones fisiol\u00f3gicas y patofisiol\u00f3gicas. Debido a las caracter\u00edsticas de los receptore s p2 en el snc, as\u00ed como las pocas herramientas farmacol\u00f3gicas para discernir entre sus distintos subtipos se opt\u00f3 por establecer un modelo de estudio en rat\u00f3n, ya que en esta especie se construyen constantemente animales gen\u00e9ticamente modificados qu e proporcionan sistemas confiables para realizar estudios bioqu\u00edmicos y fisiol\u00f3gicos tanto en condiciones normales como patol\u00f3gicas. al comparar entre la rata y el rat\u00f3n, se encontraron diferencias en la edad l\u00edmite del animal para iniciar un cultivo  de astrocitos cerebelosos, la cual influye en los procesos de senescencia de los cultivos. Los astrocitos de cerebelo de rat\u00f3n constituyen una poblaci\u00f3n homog\u00e9nea de c\u00e9lulas que responden a receptores nucleot\u00eddicos. Mediante diferentes t\u00e9cnicas hemo s demostrado que los astrocitos cerebelosos de rat\u00f3n, coexpresan varios receptores funcionales de tipo ionotr\u00f3pico: el p2x7 y posiblemente el p2x5, as\u00ed como metabotr\u00f3pico: el p2y1, p2y2\/p2y4 (solos y\/o formando heter\u00f3meros) y el p2y6. Los cultivos de  astrocitos cerebelosos de rat\u00f3n silvestre (p2x7  \/ ) expresan receptores p2x7 funcionales que tras ser activados por per\u00edodos prolongados, median la muerte celular.
