Hemos estudiado la respuesta de los macrofagos testiculares al tratamiento hormonal. La capacidad fagocitica de los macrofagos testiculares se pone especialmente de manifiesto tras la muerte masiva de las celulas de leydig por la administracion de un citotoxico especifico (eds). Las celulas de leydig muertas tras el tratamiento con eds muestran los signos morfologicos caracteristicos de la muerte por apoptosis.  estas celulas son eliminadas del intersticio testicular por los macrofagos residentes. Las ratas hipofisectomizadas a largo plazo (20-24 semanas postintervencion) presentan una disminucion tanto en el numero y tama\u00f1o de los macrofagos como en su capacidad fagocitica, que se pone de manifiesto por su incapacidad para aclarar el intersticio testicular de celulas de leydig muertas. La administracion de gonadotropinas (fsh y lh), hormona de crecimiento (gh) y, en menor medida, prolactina (prl) restaura el numero y tama\u00f1o de los macrofagos, asi como su capacidad fagocitica. El tratamiento con gonadotropina corionica humana (hcg) en ratas prepuberales, determina un aumento paralelo en el numero y tama\u00f1o de los macrofagos y las celulas de leydig.
