La deshidrogenasa i es un enzima de 27 kda que puede utilizar nadh y nadph para reducir diversos aceptores, principalmente quinonas.  tambien reduce oxalacetato, aunque solo con nadh.  la deshidrogenasa ii, de 31 kda, es especifica para el nadh, mostrando su maxima actividad con ferricianuro.  ambas deshidrogenasas difieren en cuanto a su punto isoelectrico y su sensibilidad a inhibidores. Se discute la posibilidad de que la deshidrogenasa i sea una malata deshidrogenasa implicada en procesos de elongacion celular y proteccion frente a diversos iones toxicos como el aluminio.  la
