La retenci\u00f3n de nutrientes en r\u00edos es el producto de la combinaci\u00f3n entre la tasa de transporte de nutrientes (determinada por la morfolog\u00eda del canal y la hidrolog\u00eda) y la tasa de procesamiento biol\u00f3gica (determinada por las comunidades biol\u00f3gicas que residen en la corriente). Desde esta perspectiva, la hip\u00f3tesis central de esta tesis es que las zonas de almacenamiento temporal de agua deber\u00edan desempe\u00f1ar un papel importante en la retenci\u00f3n de nutrientes, ya que aumentan el tiempo de interacci\u00f3n entre los nutrientes y la biota, y por lo tanto, pueden aumentar las posibilidades de la biota para procesar los nutrientes, lo cual puede resultar en un aumento de la retenci\u00f3n de nutrientes a escala ecosist\u00e9mica.  esta tesis se articula en dos partes y contiene cinco cap\u00edtulos. La primera parte examina la influencia de varios factores en las caracter\u00edsticas de almacenamiento transitorio de agua y sus implicaciones en la retenci\u00f3n de nutrientes utilizando metodolog\u00edas de trazadores convencionales. La segunda parte de la tesis presenta el desarrollo y la aplicaci\u00f3n de un nuevo trazador para caracterizar las zonas de almacenamiento transitorio de agua desde una perspectiva metab\u00f3lica. Esta parte incluye dos cap\u00edtulos.
