Debido a ello, persisten en el medio, son capaces de viajar largas distancias, se bioacumulan en tejidos humanos y animales y se biomagnifican a trav\u00e9s de las cadenas tr\u00f3ficas, postul\u00e1ndose como potenciales compuestos causantes de impactos significativos en la salud humana y el medio ambiente. La mayor parte de estos compuestos son creados por el hombre. mediante la utilizaci\u00f3n de diversos biomarcadores g\u00e9nicos y la especie salmo trutta  como organismo centinela, se ha evaluado el impacto de algunos de los compuestos incluidos dentro del grupo de los pops en los lagos de alta monta\u00f1a europeos. Se ha mostrado especial atenci\u00f3n en aquellos relacionados con alteraciones del sistema endocrino. Los principales biomarcadores utilizados son el gen del citocromo p4501a para los contaminantes org\u00e1nicos, la vitelogenina, prote\u00ednas de la zona radiata y receptor de estr\u00f3geno para los disruptores endocrinos y la deiodinasa 2 para los diruptores tiroideos. La expresi\u00f3n g\u00e9nica de todos ellos ha sido correlacionada, junto a otros par\u00e1metros fisiol\u00f3gicos, con la carga contaminante de cada uno de los lagos muestreados, de modo que se ha podido ampliar en el conocimiento del comportamiento atmosf\u00e9rico de los compuestos evaluados, as\u00ed como en su mecanismo de acci\u00f3n e interacci\u00f3n con el medio y las especies que lo
