Se parte de una fundamentacion teorica amplia y de un analisis detallado de las investigaciones mas significativas que se consideran proximas a este area problematica.  desde un punto de vista epistemologico-historico, se analiza la evolucion de la nocion de funcion, tratando de identificar las variables y factores condicionantes que han determinado distintos estadios en el desarrollo de la misma. Este estudio aporta elementos para analizar la ense\u00f1anza de la nocion de funcion asi como para evaluar las concepciones de los alumnos.  mediante un estudio experimental se determinan las concepciones que manifiesta una muestra de alumnos de secundaria sobre la nocion de funcion; estableciendo relaciones pertinentes entre estas concepciones y las condiciones y restricciones ejercidas por el sistema de ense\u00f1anza. Todo esto ha conducido, por una parte, a detectar diversas inconsistencias en el conocimiento de los alumnos, y por otra, a la determinacion tanto de obstaculos didacticos, debidos al funcionamiento
