Sin embargo, este g\u00e9nero carece de factores cl\u00e1sicos de virulencia, por lo que son otros los mecanismos que emplean las distintas especies de brucella para establecer un proceso infeccioso. Dentro de este g\u00e9nero, b. Ovis y b. Canis son dos especies naturalmente rugosas (carecen de cadenas polisacar\u00eddicas o en su lipopolisac\u00e1rido) que se muestran virulentas en sus hospedadores primarios (carnero y perro, respectivamente), causando importantes p\u00e9rdidas econ\u00f3micas. A pesar de ello, pr\u00e1cticamente se desconocen los mecanismos de virulencia que utilizan, ya que \u00e9stos se han analizado fundamentalmente en especies lisas de brucella. Por ello, el principal objetivo de esta tesis doctoral fue estudiar posibles factores que se encontrasen involucrados en la virulencia de ambas especies. los resultados obtenidos demostraron que b. Ovis pa y b. Canis rm6\/66 muestran un comportamiento intracelular muy similar al de las cepas lisas en las c\u00e9lulas fagoc\u00edticas y que adem\u00e1s, tambi\u00e9n utilizan una ruta de entrada a los macr\u00f3fagos mediada por los \u00abl\u00edpidos rafts\u00bb y el receptor \u00abscavenger\u00bb de clase a. Por otra parte, analizamos la distribuci\u00f3n que presentaban las prote\u00ednas de membrana externa de la familia omp25\/omp31 en el g\u00e9nero brucella y determinamos que las prote\u00ednas omp25d y omp22 son necesarias para que b. Ovis pa pueda establecer correctamente una infecci\u00f3n en las c\u00e9lulas fagoc\u00edticas, a diferencia de b. Canis rm6\/66. Finalmente, demostramos que el oper\u00f3n virb y los genes vjbr, cgs y virb2, los cuales se encuentran implicados en la virulencia de especies lisas de brucella, tambi\u00e9n ejercen un importante papel en la de la cepa naturalmente rugosa b.
