Dicho proceso se inicia de modo tal vez inconsciente en los primeros articulos de indole cientifica y llega a los limites ultimos de su biografia de poligrafa. Hemos rastreado esa labor de teorizacion en un extenso corpus de articulos, conferencias, monografias, cronicas, cartas y escritos susceptibles de formar parte de un inventario o bibliografia primaria lo mas exhaustivo posible. Del estudio de esos textos se deriva nuestro analisis, que hemos vertebrado en cinco periodos cronologicos:  1876-1879, 1880-1883, 1884-1887, 1888-1900 y 1901-1921.  en cada bloque nos centramos en las recurrencias de conceptos como inventio, dispositio, elocutio, verosimilitud, estatuto narratologico, fin de la novela y recepcion de la misma siguiendo un metodo
