El riesgo asociado a plantas qu\u00edmicas puede reducirse mediante la incorporaci\u00f3n del an\u00e1lisis de riesgos en las primeras etapas del dise\u00f1o y en la planificaci\u00f3n de adecuados procedimientos durante la operaci\u00f3n. Cuando se consideran aspectos de seguridad en el dise\u00f1o se presenta un conflicto de objetivos, por ejemplo, el que existe entre el coste y el riesgo, ya que la reducci\u00f3n del riesgo requiere de cierta inversi\u00f3n. La optimizaci\u00f3n permite resolver esta situaci\u00f3n en una forma eficiente. Por esta raz\u00f3n, se ha desarrollado una nueva metodolog\u00eda que permite incorporar el an\u00e1lisis de riesgo de forma sistem\u00e1tica, vers\u00e1til y simple en la optimizaci\u00f3n de plantas industriales. Para ello se selecciona una variable de decisi\u00f3n, normalmente asociada al dise\u00f1o o a alg\u00fan procedimiento de operaci\u00f3n, para definir la funci\u00f3n objetivo que ser\u00e1 optimizada. Dicha funci\u00f3n considera tanto la contribuci\u00f3n del coste de inversi\u00f3n como el coste de los accidentes que pueden ocurrir. El resultado es una situaci\u00f3n \u00f3ptima que es, simult\u00e1neamente, segura y rentable. La metodolog\u00eda ha sido aplicada con \u00e9xito al dise\u00f1o de instalaciones fijas, al dise\u00f1o de un sistema de transporte de sustancias peligrosas y a la definici\u00f3n de planes de
