Se realizan en todos los casos rm cerebral, incluyendo cortes coronales de 5 mm de espesor, y seleccionando la seccion correspondiente al nivel de la cisterna interpeduncular para llevar a cabo las mediciones. Se determinan las areas de ambos hipocampos, lobulos temporales, parenquima cerebral y ventricular, y los valores normalizados segun el area cerebral. Se valoran dos medidas lineales: la maxima distancia interhipocampica y el maximo diametro transverso cerebral. Las areas de los hipocampos y de los lobulos temporales estan significativamente disminuidas en pacientes con enfermedad de alzheimer probable con respecto a controles (p&lt;0.001). El area de los hipocampos es la medida con mayor poder discriminativo al comparar pacientes y controles, con una especificidad del 90.91% y una sensibilidad del 82%. La atrofia de la formacion del hipocampo ocurre precozmente en la enfermedad de alzheimer, y tiene un poder de diferenciacion entre controles y pacientes mejor que el de medidas que reflejan la atrofia cerebral global, e incluso que la atrofia del lobulo temporal en su conjunto.
