Aunque existen estudios parciales sobre la variabilidad de este cultivo, no incluyen un n\u00famero suficiente de entradas como para tener un conocimiento detallado de la misma. El objetivo de esta tesis es disponer de una informaci\u00f3n pormenorizada de la distribuci\u00f3n geogr\u00e1fica de la variaci\u00f3n de los cultivares tradicionales de tomate y de la especie y variedad estrechamente relacionadas solanum pimpinellifolium y solanum lycopersicum var. Cerasiforme en todo el rango de distribuci\u00f3n mundial de estas especies.  para ello, se han caracterizado morfol\u00f3gica y molecularmente, 204 entradas de s.L var. Cerasiforme, 202 de s.L. Var. Lycopersicum y 71 de s. Pimpinellifolium, empleado 28 descriptores morfol\u00f3gicos y 11 microsat\u00e9lites. los resultados obtenidos muestran que en s. Pimpinellifolium existe una clara diferenciaci\u00f3n gen\u00e9tica en funci\u00f3n de la procedencia geogr\u00e1fica. En s.L. Var. Cerasiforme la mayor variabilidad morfol\u00f3gica se observa en las entradas de per\u00fa y ecuador. Las entradas de s.L. Var. Lycopersicum muestran una gran variabilidad morfol\u00f3gica, siendo la variabilidad molecular m\u00e1s reducida. La variabilidad morfol\u00f3gica global es mayor en s.L. Var. Lycopersicum, siendo similar entre s. Pimpinellifolium y s.L. Var. Cerasiforme. El grado de variabilidad molecular es mayor en s. Pimpinellifolium seguido de s.L. Var. Cerasiforme y s.L. Var. Lycopersicum. Espa\u00f1a tuvo un importante papel como puente en la difusi\u00f3n del tomate desde am\u00e9rica al resto del mundo. Se han identificado entradas de s.L. Var.
