P. Vernant del libro de s. Freud \u00c2\u00bfla interpretaci\u00f3n de los sue\u00f1os\u00c2\u00bf, en que el psicoanalista examina, incluyendo a la marcha de sus teor\u00edas, el mito de edipo,  haciendo principal referencia a la versi\u00f3n de s\u00f3focles. Freud, en aquel entonces sienta su tesis de que el conflicto infantil -que, por esa raz\u00f3n, pasar\u00e1 a llamarse el complejo de edipo,- est\u00e1 inseparablemente unido al mito griego de tal modo que los elementos de la historia legend aria equivalen a los de los sue\u00f1os de sus pacientes y que, al tiempo, el famoso efecto tr\u00e1gico que ha fascinado a poetas, fil\u00f3sofos y mit\u00f3logos no es explicado completamente si no es haciendo referencia a su reci\u00e9n descubierta teor\u00eda sobre el psiquis mo infantil lo que supone un hito \u00fanico en la historia del psicoan\u00e1lisis y la filosof\u00eda por extensi\u00f3n. Al considerar vernant, erudito de la mitolog\u00eda las reflexiones de freud y sus seguidores acerca de su objeto natural de estudio, encuentra numeroso s defectos y contradicciones en la concepci\u00f3n psicoanal\u00edtica de ese mito y el espacio-tiempo en que surge concluyendo finalmente que la explicaci\u00f3n freudiana y psicoanal\u00edtica en general fuerza a estos materiales a acomodarse a un esquema predetermina do que beneficia notablemente al prestigio de sus teor\u00edas. En medio de estas posiciones antag\u00f3nicas, de una pol\u00e9mica de alcance pero a la que pocos han dedicado tiempo ni esfuerzos investigadores el propio mito de edipo, especialmente el texto de s\u00f3f ocles, siempre igual a s\u00ed mismo y sobre el que se alzaban interpretaciones divergentes, comienza a hablar poco a poco por s\u00ed mismo, m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de ellas ilustr\u00e1ndose y entrando, sin embargo en comunicaci\u00f3n con ambas.
