La herramienta fundamental de caracterizaci\u00f3n han sido las microscop\u00edas de efecto t\u00fanel (stm) y de fuerza at\u00f3mica (afm), que en combinaci\u00f3n con diferentes t\u00e9cnicas complementarias (como espectroscopia raman y fotoelectr\u00f3nica de rayos x), han permitido analizar en detalle la morfolog\u00eda, estructura y qu\u00edmica superficial de los distintos materiales oxidados.   se emple\u00f3 grafito pirol\u00edtico altamente orientado (hopg) como material carbonoso modelo para el estudio de oxidaci\u00f3n mediante plasma de descarga de barrera diel\u00e9ctrica (dbd) y mediante ozono generado por radiaci\u00f3n ultravioleta. Se pudieron establecer las diferencias esenciales entre los dos mecanismos b\u00e1sicos (f\u00edsico y qu\u00edmico) que rigen el ataque oxidativo de los materiales carbonosos. En las muestras oxidadas por plasma dbd se observ\u00f3 mediante stm un tipo de defecto a escala at\u00f3mica que no hab\u00eda sido documentado con anterioridad en materiales carbonosos. Estudios experimentales y te\u00f3ricos detallados permitieron atribuir dicho defecto a clusters intersticiales bidimensionales de ox\u00edgeno atrapados bajo el grafeno superficial del hopg.  se estudi\u00f3 en detalle la estructura de las l\u00e1minas de grafeno y de sus precursoras (\u00f3xido de grafeno) mediante stm y afm. Se constat\u00f3 el alto nivel de desorden estructural que presenta este tipo de grafeno. Asimismo, se llev\u00f3 a cabo un estudio sobre la determinaci\u00f3n precisa del grosor de l\u00e1minas de grafeno mediante estas microscop\u00edas. Por \u00faltimo, los estudios de oxidaci\u00f3n de las l\u00e1minas de grafeno revelaron su gran reactividad en comparaci\u00f3n con las de materiales graf\u00edticos de estructura m\u00e1s perfecta (hopg y grafeno pr\u00edstino). Estos estudios mostraron evidencia de una estructura heterog\u00e9nea de las l\u00e1minas a escalas de unos pocos nan\u00f3metros, de manera que coexisten zonas relativamente pr\u00edstinas junto con
