El principal agente oxidante que act\u00faa en la hidrosfera es el peroxinitrito siendo su reactividad similar a los radicales oh y no2, que son los principales oxidantes que act\u00faan en la atm\u00f3sfera. Los resultados experimentales obtenidos han permitido obtener el mecanismo mediante el cual tiene lugar la reacci\u00f3n de oxidaci\u00f3n de los aldeh\u00eddos y redefinir el mecanismo por el cual transcurre la descomposici\u00f3n del peroxinitrito. tal vez el logro m\u00e1s importante se haya alcanzado al analizar las implicaciones medioambientales de dichas reacciones, ya que se ha observado que a bajas temperaturas la reacci\u00f3n de oxidaci\u00f3n de aldeh\u00eddos genera como producto mayoritario nitritos de alquilo, a lo que se ha llamado \u00absmog fr\u00edo\u00bb. El \u00absmog fr\u00edo\u00bb consiste en la formaci\u00f3n de nitritos de alquilo, compuestos potencialmente cancer\u00edgenos, lo que supone un grave riesgo para la salud humana. Dado que la formaci\u00f3n de estos compuestos ocurre a bajas temperaturas, parece plausible determinar que el mecanismo de oxidaci\u00f3n de los aldeh\u00eddos mediante el peroxinitrito ser\u00e1
