El objetivo de esta tesis, es estudiar el papel de la tetrahidrobiopterina (bh4) en esta enfermedad, debido a la necesidad de biomarcadores y de un tratamiento satisfactorio. Se observ\u00f3 una disminuci\u00f3n de las concentraciones plasm\u00e1ticas de bh4 en presencia de fibrosis pulmonar en tres especies distintas: rat\u00f3n, rata y humanos (n=16), proponiendo la bh4 como un posible biomarcador pl\u00e1smatico de fpi. En el modelo animal de fibrosis pulmonar inducida por bleomicina, la administraci\u00f3n ex\u00f3gena de bh4 por via oral, normaliza las concentraciones plasm\u00e1ticas y mejora par\u00e1metros indicativos de fibrosis pulmonar, sobre todo a nivel vascular. En cambio, la sepiapterina, precursor de la bh4, no mejora la evoluci\u00f3n de la enfermedad, posiblemente por la corta semivida de eliminaci\u00f3n que presenta y por la baja biodisponibilidad pulmonar demostrada. La administraci\u00f3n local por via intratraqueal de bh4, no mejor\u00f3 los par\u00e1metros de fibrosis pulmonar.
