Los pol\u00edmeros con esta propiedad aparecen en la literatura bajo diversas denomin aciones como pol\u00edmeros sensibles, con capacidad de respuesta (responsive) o bajo el nombre gen\u00e9rico de sistemas inteligentes (smart). los cambios ambientales o est\u00edmulos que provocan la respuesta son de diversa naturaleza. Algunos pol\u00edmeros presentan  cambios frente a est\u00edmulos f\u00edsicos como pueden ser cambios en la temperatura, presencia de campos el\u00e9ctricos o magn\u00e9ticos. Otros est\u00edmulos capaces de provocar una respuesta en este tipo de pol\u00edmeros son de naturaleza qu\u00edmica como cambios en el ph, f uerza i\u00f3nica o presencia de determinados compuestos. Estos cambios provocan generalmente una reacci\u00f3n qu\u00edmica o la captaci\u00f3n o donaci\u00f3n de protones, que finalmente produce un cambio en las interacciones entre las cadenas polim\u00e9ricas o entre las caden as polim\u00e9ricas y el disolvente a nivel molecular. Recientemente se han considerado otro tipo de est\u00edmulos de naturaleza bioqu\u00edmica como la presencia de mol\u00e9culas bioactivas como ant\u00edgenos o enzimas, que interaccionan espec\u00edficamente con el pol\u00edmero p rovocando una respuesta. los pol\u00edmeros sensibles a ph son aquellos que contienen en su estructura grupos ionizables. Dentro de este campo, los pol\u00edmeros acr\u00edlicos permiten la f\u00e1cil incorporaci\u00f3n  de diferentes grupos funcionales mediante reacciones d e copolimerizaci\u00f3n radical, que pueden modificar sus propiedades tales como la hidrofilia\/hidrofobia, propiedades t\u00e9rmicas, mec\u00e1nicas, etc. Existen dos tipos de polielectrolitos: los de naturaleza ani\u00f3nica y los cati\u00f3nicos. En los pol\u00edmeros poli\u00e1cido s basados en pol\u00edmeros ani\u00f3nicos, los grupos ionizables m\u00e1s comunes son los \u00e1cidos carbox\u00edlicos, como el poli (\u00e1cido acr\u00edlico) [poli (aa)] o poli (\u00e1cido metacr\u00edlico) [poli (am)], que aceptan protones a ph \u00e1cido y los liberan a ph neutro o b\u00e1sico. Los  polielectrolitos cati\u00f3nicos como el poli (n,n\u00c2\u00bf-dimetilaminoetil metacrilato) [poli (dmaema)] o poli (l-lisina) [poli(ll)] se ionizan a ph \u00e1cido, siendo solubles en estas condiciones e insolubles a ph b\u00e1sico. la principal aplicaci\u00f3n desarrollada para  los pol\u00edmeros sensibles al ph es la liberaci\u00f3n de f\u00e1rmacos, basada en el diferente ph que presentan los diferentes tejidos y fluidos corporales.
