El tramo bajo del ri\u00f3 ebro tiene una larga historia de contaminaci\u00f3n relacionada con la presencia de una planta chlor-alkali adyacente a la poblaci\u00f3n de flix. Por otro lado, el rio ebro tambi\u00e9n ha sido afectado por la invasi\u00f3n de especies ex\u00f3ticas de invertebrados. Una de las mas preocupantes es la invasi\u00f3n de mejill\u00f3n cebra (dreissena polymorpha), que esta perturbando los ecosistemas naturales del rio ebro, afectando gravemente las especies nativas. A lo largo de esta tesis, dreissena polymorpha, corbicula fluminea, procambarus clarkii, psilunio littoralis y unio elongatulus han sido utilizados en pruebas de laboratorio, in situ y in vivo para: el desarrollo de un enfoque de multibiomarcadores en las especies de invertebrados, identificar los contaminantes mas peligrosos en el campo y utilizar estos biomarcadores para el  estudio de diferenciaci\u00f3n fisiol\u00f3gica y\/o del mecanismo de defensa del mejill\u00f3n d. Polymorpha versus otros bivalvos invasores y nativos.   el uso combinado de un conjunto de diversos  biomarcadores, de diferentes especies de invertebrados, y diversas aplicaciones experimentales permiti\u00f3 establecer modos de acci\u00f3n y destacar efectos de contaminantes org\u00e1nicos einorg\u00e1nicos encontrados en el campo. El mecanismo de  defensa en adultos y larvas del mejill\u00f3n cebra son mas sensibles a las substancias toxicas que el de los bivalvos nativos de agua dulce, sin embargo, la presencia de una elevada actividad transportadora del mecanismo de resistencia multixenobiotico en los estados de vida  iniciales de d.
