Sin  embargo, un an\u00e1lisis profundo de estas obras ofrece al estudioso una imagen bien distinta de este personaje. \ten el mito de atamante se pueden distinguir tres versiones que transmiten una imagen desigual del e\u00f3lida. En todas ellas no es el propio at amante quien posee el papel protagonista y activo por excelencia, sino su mujer ino. Por esta raz\u00f3n, hemos denominado a cada una de estas versiones con el nombre de sus personajes principales: la versi\u00f3n ino-frixo-hele (i-f-h), en la que atamante, ca sado con n\u00e9fele est\u00e1 en su sano juicio cuando lleva al altar del sacrificio a su(s) hijo(s) frixo (y hele); la versi\u00f3n ino-learco-melicertes (i-l-m), en la que atamante s\u00ed aparece como prototipo de una locura que debe, en todo caso, circunscribirse a l furor m\u00e1s que a la insania, por utilizar conceptos ciceronianos; y la versi\u00f3n ino-temisto (i-t), en la que el e\u00f3lida es una figura absolutamente secundaria que no cuenta lo m\u00e1s m\u00ednimo para este relato. \tde este modo, se puede calificar a atamante c omo homo sacrificans para la versi\u00f3n i-f-h, homo furens para la versi\u00f3n i-l-m y homo pasiuus para la versi\u00f3n i-t.
