Se ha demostrado que estos genes se agrupan formando una unidad de transcripcion, denominada operon cap3, que consta de tres genes, aunque unicamente los dos primeros, cap3a y cap3b, son absolutamente necesarios para la biosintesis capsular mientras que el tercero de ellos, cap3c, aunque no es imprescindible, interviene tambien en los procesos que conducen a la formacion de la capsula. Asimismo, se ha determinado la posicion que ocupan los genes capsulares en el cromosoma de neumococo y, por ultimo, se ha caracterizado la funcion que desempe\u00f1a cada una de las proteinas
