En contra de los fil\u00f3sofos materialistas de su d\u00eda, arist\u00f3teles sosten\u00eda la existencia de actualidades reales de un orden superior a aqu\u00e9l de los \u00c2\u00bfra\u00edces\u00c2\u00bf o \u00c2\u00bf\u00e1tomos\u00c2\u00bf postulados por estos fil\u00f3sofos.  Este tipo de actualidad o &#966;&#8059;&#963;&#953;&#962; \u00c2\u00bfsuperior\u00c2\u00bf, es la forma de una sustancia natural, que le da una unidad genuina m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la de un agregado de elementos, y que act\u00faa como el principio de las operaciones caracter\u00edsticas de la sustancia. \u00c2\u00bfc\u00f3mo justifica el estagirita su doctrina de estas actualidades superiores?  En esta tesis, examinar\u00e9 las justificaciones que arist\u00f3teles ofrece, tanto expl\u00edcitamente como de forma indirecta, en la f\u00edsica, la metaf\u00edsica, el de anima, el de generatione et corruptione, y el de caelo, entre otros textos.  Muestro que la justificaci\u00f3n aristot\u00e9lica para sostener la realidad de la &#966;&#8059;&#963;&#953;&#962; \u00c2\u00bfsuperior\u00c2\u00bf se deriva de dos fuentes.  En primer lugar, sus doctrinas f\u00edsicas y metaf\u00edsicas generales socavan los argumentos a favor del reduccionismo aducidos por los materialistas griegos, y hacen plausible la existencia de una &#966;&#8059;&#963;&#953;&#962; superior del tipo que propone.  En segundo lugar, arist\u00f3teles proporciona unos argumentos positivos a favor de la necesidad de postular actualidades o &#966;&#8059;&#963;&#953;&#962; superiores para explicar la existencia y actividad de los organismos.
