Las c\u00e9lulas troncales presentan un fenotipo que, siendo transitorio en el embri\u00f3n, es estable en cultivo. Las c\u00e9lulas troncales embrionarias, tambi\u00e9n conocidas como c\u00e9lulas madre, se caracterizan por ser c\u00e9lulas indiferenciadas y pluripotentes, capaces de dar lugar a todos los linajes celulares del organismo y transmitirse por la l\u00ednea germinal (bradley et al., 1984). el gen zfp42\/rex-1 es un gen exclusivo de mam\u00edferos placentarios, producido por retroposici\u00f3n a partir del gen ying yang 1 (yy1) (kim et al., 2007). Rex-1 se expresa durante la preimplantaci\u00f3n desde el estadio de cigoto hasta el de blastocisto (m.Climent, j.Schoorlemmer, datos no publicados), despu\u00e9s, se detecta su expresi\u00f3n en algunas c\u00e9lulas del trofoectodermo y los precursores de la l\u00ednea germinal. Rex-1 tambi\u00e9n se expresa en c\u00e9lulas troncales embrionarias en cultivo, en espermatocitos primarios y en teratocarcinomas. Rex-1 aparece en la lista de prote\u00ednas y genes espec\u00edficos de c\u00e9lulas es tanto en rat\u00f3n como en humano (takahashi and yamanaka, 2006), por lo que se le considera un marcador de pluripotencia. La expresi\u00f3n de la prote\u00edna rex-1 en c\u00e9lulas es en cultivo coincide con aquellas c\u00e9lulas que son totalmente pluripotentes (toyooka et al., 2008), ya que \u00fanicamente la poblaci\u00f3n del cultivo de c\u00e9lulas que s\u00ed expresa rex-1 es capaz de contribuir a la formaci\u00f3n de quimeras.  he determinado que rex1 es importante para la autorrenovaci\u00f3n de las c\u00e9lulas es de rat\u00f3n en condiciones clonog\u00e9nicas. La prote\u00edna rex1 regula la expresi\u00f3n de elementos retrovirales end\u00f3genos (ervs) en c\u00e9lulas es mediante asociaci\u00f3n al adn. Adem\u00e1s, rex1 regula a genes con expresi\u00f3n espec\u00edfica del desarrollo embrionario, y no a genes implicados directamente en la pluripotencia.
