En un futuro cercano las biorefiner\u00edas, en las que la biomasa ser\u00e1 transformada mediante procesos catal\u00edticos en combustibles, medicamentos y productos qu\u00edmicos para la agricultura, sustituir\u00e1n a las act\u00faales refiner\u00edas. En estas biorefiner\u00edas, las reacciones de hidrogen\u00f3lisis ser\u00e1n de capital importancia, ya que una caracter\u00edstica com\u00fan de los combustibles y productos qu\u00edmicos obtenidos de la biomasa es su alto contenido en ox\u00edgeno. Estas reacciones de hidrogen\u00f3lisis requieren hidr\u00f3geno como reactivo, y utilizar hidr\u00f3geno molecular es la forma m\u00e1s com\u00fan de suministrarlo. Sin embargo, la utilizaci\u00f3n de hidr\u00f3geno molecular presenta algunos inconvenientes, como son su origen f\u00f3sil, su gran inflamabilidad y los problemas de transporte y almacenamiento que plantea. La generaci\u00f3n in situ del hidr\u00f3geno requerido en las reacciones de hidrogen\u00f3lisis puede ser una alternativa que solucione la mayor\u00eda de estos inconvenientes.La presente tesis doctoral trata sobre el estudio del papel que juegan tanto los centros \u00e1cidos como los centros met\u00e1licos de catalizadores heterog\u00e9neos bifuncionales en la reacci\u00f3n de hidrogen\u00f3lisis del glicerol a 1,2-propanediol, y con la b\u00fasqueda de alternativas viables para la generaci\u00f3n in situ del hidr\u00f3geno requerido.
