Ante estos procesos, las propias empresas bancarias, han desarrollado estrategias que les permitan hacer frente con \u00e9xito a las nuevas condiciones competitivas. en este contexto, los objetivos de la tesis doctoral son: &#8211; analizar la eficiencia en el control de costes y maximizaci\u00f3n de beneficios, es decir, evaluar la eficiencia operativa de las entidades. &#8211; valorar el desarrollo de estrategias de diversificaci\u00f3n en ingresos y mercados. &#8211; evaluar la relaci\u00f3n entre las estrategias desarrolladas por las entidades con la rentabilidad y estabilidad financiera de las mismas. la muestra est\u00e1 constituida por las 44 cajas de ahorros operativas en el periodo 2000-2009. se ha aplicado el an\u00e1lisis envolvente de datos para estimar la eficiencia. El \u00edndice de herfindahl para medir la diversificaci\u00f3n y an\u00e1lisis de regresi\u00f3n multivariante para estimar las relaciones entre variables. los resultados permiten concluir que el desarrollo de estrategias adecuadas, que eviten las ineficiencias en costes y en beneficios, est\u00e1n asociadas a mayores rentabilidades y menores probabilidades de quiebra de las entidades. palabras clave: eficiencia; diversificaci\u00f3n, rentabilidad, estabilidad financiera, an\u00e1lisis envolvente de datos. abstract in recent years, financial institutions have been engaged in a transformation series (new technologies, globalization, deregulation). Given these processes, saving banks themselves, have developed strategies that enable them to successfully meet the new competitive conditions. in this context, the objectives of the thesis are: &#8211; to analyze the efficiency in controlling costs and maximizing profits, ie, evaluate the operational efficiency of financial institutions. &#8211; Assess the development of income diversification strategies and markets. &#8211; To evaluate the relationship between the strategies developed by the entities to profitability and their financial stability. the sample consists of the 44 savings banks operating in the period 2000-2009. It has applied the data envelopment analysis to estimate the efficiency, the herfindahl index to measure diversification and multivariate regression analysis to estimate relationships between variables. the results suggest that the development of appropriate strategies, to avoid and cost profit inefficiencies are associated with higher returns and less likely to bankrupt entities.
