En los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, numerosos estudios de prevenci\u00f3n nutricional han suscitado un gran inter\u00e9s por invest igar los efectos beneficiosos de los compuestos bioactivos de los alimentos frente a estas enfermedades. En concreto, se ha descrito que los flavonoides pueden proteger del estr\u00e9s oxidativo a trav\u00e9s de su actividad antioxidante y de su capacidad de m odular las v\u00edas de se\u00f1ales celulares. El cacao supone una importante fuente de procianidinas, un tipo de flavonoides de alto peso molecular y de limitada absorci\u00f3n intestinal. Sin embargo, a pesar de sus propiedades y de su amplia aceptaci\u00f3n, son poc os los estudios que se han centrado en investigar los efectos de los flavonoides del cacao en el epitelio de la mucosa intestinal. En este estudio se han puesto de manifiesto los mecanismos moleculares de protecci\u00f3n de los flavonoides del cacao en el colon frente al estr\u00e9s oxidativo y la inflamaci\u00f3n tanto en
