Esta corriente desempe\u00f1a un papel importante en el control de la excitabilidad neuronal, ya que se encuentra activa por debajo del umbral de disparo de potenciales de acci\u00f3n act\u00faando como freno inhibitorio y contrarrestando la excitaci\u00f3n de la neurona, devolvi\u00e9ndola a su estado de reposo. Tuvieron que pasar cerca de 20 a\u00f1os para que se descubriera el sustrato de la corriente m. En 1998 se describieron los canales selectivos al potasio de la familia kcnq (kv7). Actualmente, se sabe que mutaciones en cuatro de sus cinco miembros (kv7.1-kv7.5) se asocian a enfermedades autos\u00f3micas dominantes. Algunas mutaciones en las subunidades neuronales kv7.2 o kv7.3 se han visto implicadas en un s\u00edndrome epil\u00e9ptico conocido como convulsiones neonatales familiares benignas (bfnc). La regi\u00f3n c-terminal intracelular de estos canales presenta varios dominios de regulaci\u00f3n de prote\u00ednas y l\u00edpidos. En particular dos h\u00e9lices (h\u00e9lices a y b) presentes en esta regi\u00f3n forman un dominio discontinuo que une la prote\u00edna calmodulina. La importancia funcional de tal interacci\u00f3n todav\u00eda esta poco estudiada pero hay evidencias que demuestran que es trascendental para el correcto funcionamiento de los canales. El objetivo de esta tesis doctoral ha sido la caracterizaci\u00f3n bioqu\u00edmica de la interacci\u00f3n entre la calmodulina y los canales kv72, analizando los aspectos m\u00e1s relevantes que pueden afectar a tal interacci\u00f3n como los niveles de ca2+ y la presencia de mutaciones en el canal. Adem\u00e1s hemos podido determinar cuales regiones, tanto en el canal como en la calmodulina, son importantes para la interacci\u00f3n de estas dos prote\u00ednas.
