Para ello se han estudiado los g\u00e9neros pr\u00f3ximos karoowia, omphalodiella y placoparmelia mediante an\u00e1lisis filogen\u00e9ticos usand o marcadores moleculares de adn y un estudio comparado de sus caracteres fenot\u00edpicos. Estos tres g\u00e9neros pertenecen al mismo linaje evolutivo que las especies del g\u00e9nero xanthoparmelia y los caracteres fenot\u00edpicos en los que se bas\u00f3 la su descripci\u00f3n  se incluyen dentro de la variabilidad morfol\u00f3gica de xanthoparmelia. Se ha realizado la sinonimia de los tres g\u00e9neros  en xanthoparmelia. Tambi\u00e9n se ha datado el origen y la diversificaci\u00f3n de los l\u00edquenes parmelioides y se ha valorado si la distrib uci\u00f3n disyunta entre continentes es debida a vicarianza por deriva continental o a dispersi\u00f3n a larga distancia. Los resultados muestran que los l\u00edquenes parmelioides se originaron en torno al tr\u00e1nsito entre el cret\u00e1cico y el terciario (60 ma) y la r adiaci\u00f3n de los diferentes g\u00e9neros se produjo entre el oligoceno y el plioceno, por lo que las distribuciones actuales no pueden ser explicadas por vicarianza debida a la deriva continental.
