Los modelos animales permiten acelerar el desarrollo de tratamientos basados en nuevas dianas terap\u00e9uticas, as\u00ed como un mayor conocimiento de las bases biol\u00f3gicas y fisiopatol\u00f3gicas de la enfermedad.\tEn los \u00faltimos a\u00f1os, ha aumentado el n\u00famero de estudios que relacionan alteraciones en la prote\u00edna munc18-1, implicada en la neuroexocitosis, con la fisiopatolog\u00eda de la esquizofrenia. El modelo animal munc18-oe (overexpression) sobreexpresa la isoforma cerebral munc18-1a en diferentes regiones cerebrales. Los resultados obtenidos de la caracterizaci\u00f3n de este modelo animal sugieren que la prote\u00edna munc18-1a es importante para el desarrollo de un amplio espectro de alteraciones neuroqu\u00edmicas y comportamentales que mimetizan s\u00edntomas asociados con la enfermedad, as\u00ed como hallazgos neurobiol\u00f3gicos observados en sujetos diagnosticados de esquizofrenia.\tPor otro lado, multitud de evidencias relacionan el sistema glutamat\u00e9rgico con la fisiopatolog\u00eda de la enfermedad. Parte del abordaje terap\u00e9utico se centra en el estudio de f\u00e1rmacos que emplean, especialmente, los receptores mglur2 como dianas terap\u00e9uticas. Los ratones knock-out para el receptor mglur2 proporcionan evidencias de la existencia de interacci\u00f3n entre los receptores mglur2 y 5-ht2a observada en el cerebro de mam\u00edferos. Adem\u00e1s, permite un mayor conocimiento de la posible implicaci\u00f3n de estos receptores en la neurotransmisi\u00f3n noradren\u00e9rgica. Finalmente, este modelo animal podr\u00eda ser empleado para el estudio del mecanismo de acci\u00f3n de diferentes f\u00e1rmacos antipsic\u00f3ticos, as\u00ed como para evaluar nuevas estrategias
