Mediante t\u00e9cnicas no invasivas dedeterminaci\u00f3n hormonal en heces se han medido glucocorticoides para relacionarlos estresantes ambientales y la condici\u00f3n del animal, adem\u00e1s de su implicaci\u00f3n enla reproducci\u00f3n. Mediante el an\u00e1lisis de hormonas sexuales (andr\u00f3genos,estr\u00f3genos y progest\u00e1genos), se han intentado dilucidar las causas del fracasoreproductor, evaluando la ciclicidad ov\u00e1rica, la identificaci\u00f3n de los individuosverdaderamente reproductores y la posible interacci\u00f3n entre los diferentes ejesendocrinos en la regulaci\u00f3n del comportamiento reproductivo. Se recolectaron 572muestras fecales correspondientes a 15 rinocerontes blancos (9 hembras y 6machos) procedentes de tres h\u00e1bitats: cautividad (n=3); semi-cautividad (n=4) yuna poblaci\u00f3n en libertad (n=8). Se observ\u00f3 una correlaci\u00f3n entre lasconcentraciones de glucocorticoides y las condiciones de cautividad, de forma quecuanto m\u00e1s estrictas son dichas condiciones, mayores niveles de glucocorticoidespresenta esta especie. En relaci\u00f3n a las hormonas sexuales analizadas, hemosdetectado un patr\u00f3n reproductivo estacional en los rinocerontes en su h\u00e1bitatnatural, que parece perderse en condiciones de cautividad. Las concentraciones deprogest\u00e1genos han servido como indicadores de la gestaci\u00f3n y de la fase l\u00fatea deestos animales, mientras que las concentraciones de estr\u00f3genos han podido serafectadas por los fitoestr\u00f3genos ingeridos mediante la dieta. Nuestros resultadosconfirman que los m\u00e9todos no invasivos de determinaci\u00f3n hormonal son potentesherramientas en el estudio de la endocrinolog\u00eda gonadal y adrenal del rinoceronteblanco (ceratotherium simum).Palabras clave: rinoceronte blanco, reproducci\u00f3n, endocrinolog\u00eda,comportamiento.Abstractthe aim of is doctoral thesis is to increase the actual information on gonadaland adrenal endocrinology in the white rhinoceros, studying the effect of threedifferent habitat conditions (captivity, semi-captivity and wild population), on thebehaviour and reproduction of these animals, in order to obtain higher reproductivesuccess in captivity, and to improve the management of the populations. Noninvasivetechniques for determining faecal hormone concentrations were used tomeasure glucocorticoid levels and related them to environmental stressors, animalcondition and reproduction. By analyzing sex hormones (androgens, estrogens andprogestagens) we have attempted to elucidate the causes of reproductive failure,evaluating ovarian cyclicity, identifying truly reproductive individuals and thepossible interaction between the different axes involved in regulating endocrinereproductive behaviour. A total of 572 faecal samples were collected from 15 whiterhinos (9 females and 6 males), from three different h\u00e1bitats, captivity (n = 3);semi-captivity (n = 4) and wild population (n = 8). We have found a correlationbetween glucocorticoid levels and the different captive conditions, associating themore stringent conditions, the higher levels of glucocorticoids in this species. Wehave detected a seasonal reproductive pattern in all sex hormones analyzed in thewild population, which seems to disappear in captivity. Progestagen concentrationshave served as accurate indicators of gestation and luteal phase of these animals,whereas estrogen concentrations may have been affected by phytoestrogensingested through the diet. Our results confirm that non-invasive methods ofhormonal determination are powerful tools in the study of gonadal and adrenalendocrinology white rhinoceros (ceratotherium simum).Keywords: white
