Se han desarrollado nuevos biomarcadores y se ha estudiado el efecto de la biolog\u00eda de la lombriz en su medici\u00f3n, que pueden llegar a producir interpretaciones err\u00f3neas de los datos. Tambi\u00e9n se ha demostrado que factores f\u00edsico-qu\u00edmicos del suelo como la materia org\u00e1nica y el ph influyen en la biodisponibilidad de los contaminantes y en los biomarcadores por su acci\u00f3n como factores de estr\u00e9s adicionales. Dadas las dificultades de trabajar con exposiciones in vivo para la evaluaci\u00f3n de la toxicidad del suelo, se ha desarrollado un cultivo celular primario de c\u00e9lulas inmunitarias de la lombriz, los celomocitos, y se ha demostrado su sensibilidad ante compuestos qu\u00edmicos t\u00f3xicos como metales (pb, cd, ni, cu) y ante elutriados de suelos reales contaminados del pa\u00eds vasco. Entre los biomarcadores m\u00e1s usados y m\u00e1s sensibles est\u00e1 la captaci\u00f3n de rojo neutro (nru) que presenta una respuesta bif\u00e1sica con un descenso inicial y un incremento posterior.Con con la ayuda del an\u00e1lisis de citometr\u00eda de flujo se ha determinado como un efecto del cambio en las subpoblaciones de celomocitos. Nru y la medici\u00f3n de riboflavina en cultivos, han sido implementado finalmente en la evaluaci\u00f3n de la toxicidad de un emplazamiento del pa\u00eds vasco con contaminaci\u00f3n mixta, y han resultado ser sensibles y eficaces para la determinaci\u00f3n de la toxicidad de suelos.
