A su vez, los sedimentos act\u00faan como sumidero de una gran parte de los contaminantes que se incorporan por diferentes v\u00edas al medio fluvial, y son a su vez, fuente de dichas substancias para la columna de agua. La entrada en vigor de la directiva  marco de la comunidad europea (directiva 2000\/60\/ce) para la pol\u00edtica de aguas y la directiva 76\/464\/cee, obliga a los estados miembros a efectuar controles peri\u00f3dicos de los sedimentos de los r\u00edos. En la presente tesis doctoral, se ha llevado a cabo el estudio de la toxicidad de sedimento fluviales pertenecientes a las cuencas hidrogr\u00e1ficas del ebro y cant\u00e1bricas, mediante el bioensayo de toxicidad cr\u00f3nica (28 d\u00edas) con el oligoqueto acu\u00e1tico tubifex tubifex.Tras el periodo de estudio, t. Tubifex ha demostrado ser un organismo adecuado para la identificaci\u00f3n de la presencia de alteraciones en sedimentos con diferente grado de contaminaci\u00f3n. El estudio de la toxicidad basada en an\u00e1lisis multivariante de las variables de toxicidad del bioensayo cr\u00f3nico con t. Tubifex, y siguiendo la filosof\u00eda del reference condition approach (reynoldson et al., 1997) mediante elipses de probabilidad (rodr\u00edguez et al., 2011), ha permitido la evaluaci\u00f3n de los sedimentos en tres clases de toxicidad: no t\u00f3xicos, potencialmente t\u00f3xicos y t\u00f3xicos. Mediante este m\u00e9todo se han controlado los errores estad\u00edsticos tipo i y ii, es decir, la proabilidad de clasificar sitios no t\u00f3xicos como t\u00f3xicos y la probabilidad de clasificar sitios t\u00f3xicos como no t\u00f3xicos, respectivamente. Controlas los errores tipo i y ii est\u00e1 directamente relacionado con costos socio-econ\u00f3micos y medioambientales. As\u00ed mismo, se ha realizado el estudio de la bioacumulaci\u00f3n de metales en t. Tubifex tras la exposici\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica a los sedimentos fluviales. Esto ha permitido derivar valores cr\u00edticos de bioacumulaci\u00f3n para 7 metales (cd, cu, cr, hg, ni, pb y zn) y un metaloide (as) en base a las condiciones de referencia para t. Tubifex.
