Mediante este potente instrumento matem\u00e1tico que engloba los as\u00edllamados c\u00e1lculos de primeros principios, se ha podido acceder e investigar detalles dediversos sistemas.En primer lugar, se han estudiado excitaciones electr\u00f3nicas en superficies constituidospor \u00e1tomos pesados. En dicho tipo de superficies, el acoplamiento relativista spin\u00f3rbitatiene profundos efectos en las propiedades de los electrones. En estascondiciones, se ha simulado el efecto causado el estos electrones por un campoelectromagnetico externo. Las excitaciones asociadas a este proceso han sidocalculadas mediante el uso de las fmlw. De este modo, se ha descubierto que lainteracci\u00f3n spin-\u00f3rbita puede determinar profundamente la cantidad de luz que unasuperficie puede absorber.En segundo lugar, se han estudiado excitaciones electr\u00f3nicas colectivas (plasmones) enel sodio, variando la presi\u00f3n ejercida en el sistema de 0 a 180 gpa. Dicho estudio hasido posible gracias a que se ha expresado la funci\u00f3n respuesta del sistema en t\u00e9rminosde las fmlw, lo cual posibilita disminuir el coste de los c\u00e1lculos computacionalesconsiderablemente. De este modo, se ha descubierto un plasmon anisotr\u00f3pico en unafase del sodio que a priori no deber\u00eda presentar grandes anisotrop\u00edas. Se ha demostradoque dicho efecto esta asociado a un efecto de la estructura de bandas no predicho pormodelos simplificados.En tercer lugar, se han aplicado las fmlw al estudio te\u00f3rico de atomos ultrafr\u00edosatrapados en redes \u00f3pticas. Las fmlw representan una base ideal para modelos tightbindingde estos sistemas debido al alto grado de localizaci\u00f3n de estas funciones en elespacio real.
