Neoformans y c. Gattii las principales especies que causan infecci\u00f3n en humano. Cryptococcus  neoformans causa meningoencefalitis principalmente en pacientes vih, mientras que c. Gattii causa neumon\u00eda en personas inmunocompetentes. La principal caracter\u00edstica de estas levaduras es la presencia de una c\u00e1psula de polisac\u00e1rido que rodea al cuerpo celular. Cryptococcus induce cambios morfol\u00f3gicos durante la infecci\u00f3n que consisten en: 1) aumento del tama\u00f1o capsular, y 2) formaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas gigantes. En esta tesis, hemos investigado estos cambios morfol\u00f3gicos as\u00ed como los mecanismos responsables siguiendo distintas estrategias.  El crecimiento capsular ocurre durante la infecci\u00f3n en ratones y en larvas de galleria mellonella. Adem\u00e1s, mediante una aproximaci\u00f3n gen\u00f3mica hemos identificado posibles nuevos genes involucrados en el crecimiento capsular y en la virulencia de c. Neoformans. En paralelo, hemos confirmado que el crecimiento capsular est\u00e1 coordinado con la progresi\u00f3n del ciclo celular. De tal forma que factores que regulan el crecimiento celular en g1, tambi\u00e9n regulan el crecimiento de la c\u00e1psula en c. Neoformans. Por \u00faltimo, hemos comprobado que la formaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas gigantes contribuye a la evasi\u00f3n del sistema inmune y a la virulencia de cryptococcus en el hu\u00e9sped. Adem\u00e1s, la formaci\u00f3n de c\u00e9lulas gigantes es distinta en c. Neoformans y en c.
