Adem\u00e1s estel\u00edpido induce la agregaci\u00f3n de ves\u00edculas peroxidadas como consecuencia de la formaci\u00f3n de iminas en la membrana, lo cual podr\u00eda ser fisiol\u00f3gicamente relevante para comprender la funci\u00f3n de los esfingl\u00edpidos en la aterosclerosos.Las propiedades biof\u00edsicas de los esfingl\u00edpidos son complejas y dificiles de predecir a partir la longitud de su cadena o el grado de insaturaci\u00f3n. Estos l\u00edpidos son por tanto mol\u00e9culas complejas no s\u00f3lo desde un punto de vista biol\u00f3gico sino tambi\u00e9n cuando se tienen en cuenta sus propiedades f\u00edsico-qu\u00edmicas.Las recientemente descubiertas 1-desoxiceramidas tiene propiedades biofisicas que difieren de aquellas de sus equivalentes can\u00f3nicos. En general son m\u00e1s hidrof\u00f3bicas y tienen temperaturas de transici\u00f3n m\u00e1s altas. Las formas desoximetiladas son las de mayor impacto en las propiedades de la bicapa de esfingomielina.
