Esta metodolog\u00eda presenta varios inconvenientes, tales como la contaminaci\u00f3n potencial de las muestras, la baja representatividad temporal (especialmente en sistemas altamente din\u00e1micos) y la poca relevancia ecotoxicol\u00f3gica de los resultados obtenidos. Se han sugerido varias t\u00e9cnicas emergentes como alternativa para superar las limitaciones del monitoreo convencional: e.G. El muestreador pasivo dgt (t\u00e9cnica de gradiente de difusi\u00f3n en capa fina) y los bioensayos en combinaci\u00f3n con las t\u00e9cnicas tie (t\u00e9cnicas de evaluaci\u00f3n e identificaci\u00f3n de la toxicidad). Se llevaron a cabo diferentes investigaciones espec\u00edficas en el campo para probar su correcto funcionamiento. En general, los dgts midieron concentraciones fiables de metal l\u00e1bil, independientemente de la variabilidad del sistema, ayudaron a detectar los procesos que afectan a la especiaci\u00f3n de los metales y las fuentes de contaminantes y midieron concentraciones muy bajas de metales. Los bioensayos de laboratorio en combinaci\u00f3n con las t\u00e9cnicas tie permitieron detectar las zonas de mayor riesgo ambiental y establecer relaciones de causa-efecto en sedimentos, elutriados y agua marina.
