Developed countries invest enormous sums of money in research into substances to prevent or delay the effects of the process (gil ortega, 2014) &#8211; hence the interest in developing experimental models for its study and new protection methods. the first objective of our study was to establish a model of cutaneous photoaging in skh-1 mice chronically exposed to uvr, and the second to evaluate the possible protective effects of astaxanthin.   sixty skh1\/crl mice were exposed to 80 sessions of uvr (98.6% uva and 1.4% uvb) for 60 minutos\/session, 3 times per week (total of 1,688 j\/cm2 per animal). The mice were divided into two groups (n= 30): the control group, which only received uvr, and a second group, which received uvr and astaxanthin adminsitered orally at 0.05 mg \/ animal \/ day.   since most of the animals of the second group showed no neoplastic lesions at the end of the 80 sessions, the treatment was continued in 10 mice to reach 113 sessions (2,384,3 j\/cm2).    the control group animals showed the alterations characteristic of photoaging (100% squamous carcinomas), so that the experimental model can be considered ideal for studying such pathologies. However, there were differences in the lesions treated with astaxanthin compared with the control group: erythema became permanent and showed a reticulated pattern 15-16 sessions later than in the control group; a marked geometric pattern of the skin (8-10 sessions later); swelling and\/of querat\u00f3sicas cut\u00e1neo-lesiones (10-12 sessions later); wrinkling (15-16 sessions) and eritemato-erosivas lesions (5-6 sessions later).  the most pronounced differences concerned the tumoral lesions, which only appeared in 10 animals of the treated group. Of the 20 animals that received 80 sessions, only 2 showed tumours, while, of the 10 animals that received 113 sessions, tumour growth was evident in 6 after 100 sessions and another 2 after 113 sessions. All the neoplasias corresponded to squamous cell carcinomas.  microscopically, there were also differences in the precancerous lesions observed: dysplasia in 60% of animals after 80 sessions and in 80% after 113 sessions. &Quot;in situ&quot; carcinomas were observed in 25 and 75%, respectively of the treated animals.  In the control group, on the other hand, both were observed in 100% of the animals.   an immunohistochemical study pointed to a significantly higher cell proliferation rate in the tumours of the control group, while mmp-9 expression was higher in the tumours of the treated group. Metaloproteinase timp-1 inhibitor expression was greater in the stroma of the tumours of the treated animals, suggesting that treatment with astaxanthin may inhibit tumour progression by inducing the synthesis of inhibitors of metaloproteinases in the tumoral stroma.   vii. Resumen  el fotoenvejecimiento es un tema de enorme inter\u00e9s socio-sanitario (kawada, 2011) al ser un proceso patol\u00f3gico com\u00fan su manejo cl\u00ednico y terap\u00e9utico implica un alto presupuesto sanitario (yaar, 2007; jemal, 2011; siegel, 2012). Los pa\u00edses desarrollados invierten sumas millonarias en la investigaci\u00f3n de sustancias que eviten o retrasen sus efectos (gil ortega,2014). De ah\u00ed el inter\u00e9s del desarrollo de modelos experimentales para su estudio, as\u00ed como el de nuevas medidas de fotoprotecci\u00f3n.  el primer objetivo de nuestro trabajo correspondi\u00f3 al establecimiento de un modelo de fotoenvejecimiento cut\u00e1neo en ratones skh-1 mediante exposici\u00f3n cr\u00f3nica a ruv; el segundo fue evaluar los posibles efectos protectores de la  astaxantina.   utilizamos 60 ratones skh1\/crl, expuestos a ruv (98,6% uva y 1,4% uvb) \/ 60 minutos \/ sesi\u00f3n \/ 3 veces a la semana \/ 80 sesiones, con un total de 1.688 j\/cm2 por animal. Los ratones se dividieron en dos grupos (n= 30): el control s\u00f3lo recibi\u00f3 ruv y el segundo, ruv m\u00e1s astaxantina \/ oral \/ 0,05 mg \/ animal \/ dia.   dado que en la mayor\u00eda de los animales de este grupo no se originaron lesiones neopl\u00e1sicas al final del experimento (80 sesiones), seguimos aplicando hasta un total de 113 sesiones (2.384,3 j\/cm2)  a 10 ratones,.   los animales expuestos exclusivamente a ruv grupo control presentaron las alteraciones caracter\u00edsticas descritas en el fotoenvejecimiento (100% de carcinomas escamosos), por lo que lo consideramos un modelo experimental id\u00f3neo para el estudio de estas patolog\u00edas.   no obstante, encontramos diferencias entre las lesiones de los animales tratados con astaxantina, respecto a las del control: el eritema se hac\u00eda fijo con aspecto reticulado, 15-16 sesiones mas tarde que en el control; la presentaci\u00f3n del marcado patr\u00f3n geom\u00e9trico de la piel (8-10 sesiones); arrugas (15-16 sesiones); engrosamiento cut\u00e1neo-lesiones querat\u00f3sicas (10-12 sesiones) y de las lesiones eritemato-erosivas (5-6 sesiones).   las diferencias m\u00e1s destacables fueron en las lesiones tumorales, ya que solo las presentaron 10 animales del grupo tratado. De los 20 que recibieron  80 sesiones, solo  2 presentaron tumores; y de los 10 que recibieron 113 sesiones, se presentaron solo en 6 a partir de la sesi\u00f3n 100 y en 2 tras la 113. Todas las neoplasias correspond\u00edan a carcinomas de c\u00e9lulas escamosas.  microsc\u00f3picamente, tambi\u00e9n encontramos  diferencias en las lesiones precancerosas: la displasia en: el 60% de los animales tras la sesi\u00f3n 80 y en el 80% tras la 113; el carcinoma &quot;in situ&quot; en el 25% y el 75% respectivamente, mientras que en los animales del grupo control se observaban ambos en el 100% de los animales.  en el estudio inmunohistoqu\u00edmico, constatamos un incremento significativo de la tasa de proliferaci\u00f3n celular en los tumores del grupo control respecto a los tratados. La expresi\u00f3n de mmp-9 result\u00f3 m\u00e1s alta en los tumores de los animales tratados que en los del control. Sin embargo, el inhibidor de metaloproteinasas timp-1, se expres\u00f3 de forma m\u00e1s intensa en el estroma de los tumores de los animales tratados que en los controles, sugiriendo que el tratamiento con astaxantina podr\u00eda inhibir la progresi\u00f3n tumoral, mediante la inducci\u00f3n de la s\u00edntesis de inhibidores de metaloproteinasas en el estroma
