Durantea\u00f1os, se asumi\u00f3 que el papel de las ceramidas en las membranasbiol\u00f3gicas era el de promover fuertes interaccionesintermoleculares debido a su capacidad para formar puentes dehidr\u00f3geno entre cabeza-cabeza ( 2). Como consecuencia, tienden asegregarse y formar dominios ordenados que presentan car\u00e1cters\u00f3lido o similar al de un gel ( 3). In vivo, la ceramida puede apareceren la membrana plasm\u00e1tica como producto de la hidr\u00f3lisis de laesfingomielina, durante la apoptosis natural o cuando la muertecelular es inducida ( 4, 5).Las ceramidas no forman bicapas estables por s\u00ed solas y s\u00f3lo ganansuficiente estabilidad cuando son mezcladas con otros l\u00edpidoscompatibles en la formaci\u00f3n de bicapas, particularmente laesfingomielina. Las monocapas de langmuir de ceramidas son portanto \u00fatiles para entender las propiedades mec\u00e1nicas de lasceramidas de membrana y su mezclas con l\u00edpidos que incluyanesfingomielina.Los estudios en monocapas de ceramidas puras son relativamenteescasos y se concentran principalmente en las propiedades de equilibrio obtenidas de las isotermas de compresi\u00f3n ( , , , , , 6 7 8 9 10 11). Deesos estudios sabemos que las monocapas de ceramidas poseenmuy baja compresibilidad en comparaci\u00f3n con los t\u00edpicosfosfol\u00edpidos fluidos.La fluidez, entendida como el inverso de la viscosidad, es uno delos principales atributos de las membranas biol\u00f3gicas, esencial parael mantenimiento de una distribuci\u00f3n apropiada de l\u00edpidos y unadifusi\u00f3n adecuada de las prote\u00ednas de membrana en la bicapa.
