Esta tesis puede considerarse, en definitiva, un eslabón intermedio que conecta teoría y práctica y, de ella, pueden extraerse evidentes implicaciones que bien pueden trasladarse de la esfera académica a la esfera profesional del sector turístico. cultural terms in the spanish-english tourism sector: translation, manipulation and actual reception in anglophone users jorge soto almela the present thesis addresses the issue of translation of culture-specific items in tourist texts in english in the region of murcia and the importance of their reception in real users. In particular, in our work, besides carrying out an indepth study of the tourist texts as specialised texts and the translation of culture-specific items as a fundamental feature of the tourism discourse, we give priority to the figure of the receiver starting from the general hypothesis that the fact of belonging to a particular group of users (visitors or residents) will be related to the preferred translated version. Our main aim is to determine the existing connection between the type of anglophone users of tourist brochures of the region of murcia and the preferred translated version of culture-specific items into english. for the purpose mentioned above, we designed a mixed cross-sectional study in which an online questionnaire was administered to 242 visitors and 122 residents; all prospective users of tourist brochures in the region of murcia. The questionnaire was designed to enable us to obtain not only the socio-cultural and demographic data of the participants, but also their translatological preferences regarding a set of cultural terms closely linked to murcian culture and divided into three distinct cultural areas (cuisine, cultural heritage and environment). These cultural terms or culturemes were selected from a corpus of tourist brochures published by official organisations of the region of murcia and distributed free of cost. the data collected through the questionnaire enabled us, in addition to verifying or refuting our general hypothesis, to identify the most and least widely accepted translation technique according to the anglophone visitors and residents; to establish whether significant differences exist in the choice of the various translation techniques; to determine if being a visitor or a resident influences the technique selected in each cultural term; to find out the degree of success of tourist translations published by official organisations of the region of murcia regarding the transfer of culturemes; and finally, to compare the translation priorities of both groups. the different statistical analyses carried out suggest, in general, the existence of specific trends that distinguish visitors from residents. However, these trends do not override the apparent common feeling of foreigner or tourist who, according to this study, prefers to access as much information as possible. In particular, these slight trends could be summarized according to the degree of elaboration preferred by each group of users. Thus, although both groups consider amplification as the best translation technique, visitors tend to select it to a greater extent as opposed to residents, which denotes a more elaborate exoticism preferred by this group. In the group of residents, the most notable and differentiated trend with respect to visitors lies in a greater choice of foreignisation, which implies a higher degree of preference towards a non-elaborate exoticism. this study contributes to the consolidation of the relatively unexplored area of tourism translation and gives it the attention and the status it deserves within translation studies. It is also a methodologically innovative work in the area of tourist translation, since a fundamentally empirical study has been conducted, not focused on the translation process, but on the translated product and its readers-tourists. This thesis could be considered, in short, an intermediate link connecting theory and practice. There are clear implications deriving from the results which can be extrapolated from the academic sphere to the professional tourism sector.

Datos académicos de la
