La atx es el principal factor de virulencia en la gangrena gaseosa. Las c\u00e9lulas gm95 tratadas con atx desarrollam muerte celular por apoptosis al cabo de pocas horas. La toxina tiene actividad fosfolipasa c y esfingomielinasa, y produce un descenso generalizado en los fosfolipidos celulares y un aumento de las ceramidas, mensajeros de apoptosis. No se observa el esperado aumento en diacilgliceroles, pero si aumentan los triacilgliceroles probablemente derivados de los anteriores. Cuando las c\u00e9lulas se tratan con la bacteria productora de toxina, los efectos observados son similares, pero de menor magnitud. Tambi\u00e9n se ha estudiado la lipid\u00f3mica de la fracci\u00f3n resistente a la solubilizaci\u00f3n por detergente (triton x-100) de c\u00e9lulas mdck. La fracci\u00f3n resistente est\u00e1 muy enriquecida en l\u00edpidos saturados, especialmente diacilgliceroles y ceramidas. La tesis se completa con estudios sobre la toxina \u00e9psilon de c.
