In the first chapter a literature review on the historical, sociological, economical and legal determining factors is carried out. These factors explain both national and internationally this sector's main characteristics. In this respect, the role of the immigrant woman and the spanish aliens act are also addressed. The second chapter deals with the economical scenario and labour market situation in the region of murcia during the period subject to study, specially focusing on both household and care sector and immigration role. The third chapter constitutes this thesis' core. The characteristics of the supply and demand and working conditions in this moment are described. The fourth chapter deals with the household and care market in helsinki, considering the existing legal and labour framework and comparing it with murcia's framework. the labour structure of domestic work is marked by its historical background which has conditioned this labour market from that time to the present with two key elements: its underestimation and invisibility. International standards lay the foundations for this activity's standardisation, particularly, from the women world's conference in 1985 and specially with the domestic workers convention 189 in 2011. The most significant legislative changes in spain take place in 1969 (decree 2346/1969) and in 1985 (royal decree 1424/1985) which are substituted in 2011 (act 27/2011 and royal decree 1620/2011), considering additional amendments in act 27/2011 after the royal decree 29/2012 was adopted. the fourth chapter shows the important role that foreign women play in the household and care market both in the region and municipality of murcia. Foreign women represent within the analysed period almost 75% of the registered contracts in the municipality of murcia. From 2005 onwards, a great deal of employment, which was statistically hidden until that year, emerged with the regularisation programmes for illegal immigrants. this thesis' core is based on the analysis of the household and care labour market regarding the supply and demand with the aim of knowing more precisely the applied working conditions between 2007 and 2010. A total of 2,219 surveys were carried out from which 695 corresponded to families and 1,524 to domestic immigrant female workers in the city of murcia. Ten semi-structured interviews were also carried out to support the obtained conclusions from the data analysis. These figures contrast with the contracts made during this period in the municipality (556). results show that immigrant women did not have any obstacles to find a job during the analysed period regardless of their situation of legality. Nevertheless, this state of lawlessness is not desirable for her. Labour regularisation constitutes the guarantee to continue working within the spanish territory, something that is becoming every time more necessary giving the reforms on the aliens act. To this respect, the willingness of families to legally employ their workers has increased slightly. This improvement involves that immigrant women are responsible for the social security payment, and both tasks to carry out and working time have experienced a remarkable increase. This situation contrasts with helsinki's situation where the sector is considered a professional activity and the minimum legal regulations are respected. A key element which distinguishes both cities is the great importance of internal workers in murcia.
