Son ecosistemas de elevada biodiversidad que albergan multitud de especies de alto valor ecol\u00f3gico y para la conservaci\u00f3n. No obstante, pese a estos valores y servicios, son de los ecosistemas m\u00e1s amenazados del planeta, en el caso de los humedales litorales, debido principalmente a su fragilidad natural por representar sistemas receptores y de transici\u00f3n, y por el aprovechamiento intensivo que generalmente ha realizado el hombre de muchos de sus recursos (tanto bi\u00f3ticos como abi\u00f3ticos).  la presente tesis se enmarca en el estudio de los humedales litorales mediterr\u00e1neos y su biodiversidad asociada. En concreto, el conjunto de estudios descritos a continuaci\u00f3n se desarrollan en el complejo laguna costera del mar menor-humedales asociados. En respuesta a diferentes objetivos espec\u00edficos se pretende analizar la respuesta o papel bioindicador de la comunidad de aves acu\u00e1ticas, una de sus taxocenosis de mayor valor ecol\u00f3gico, a diferentes procesos funcionales y gradientes estructurales naturales o artificiales presentes en la laguna, en distintas escalas espaciales y temporales. Entre esos procesos podemos destacar, por un lado, el cambio tr\u00f3fico en las aguas debido a la llegada, durante las \u00faltimas d\u00e9cadas, de efluentes de origen agr\u00edcola y urbano, que han provocando un cambio en la producci\u00f3n primaria, dirigiendo el sistema hacia condiciones de eutrofia; por otro lado, el importante desarrollo urbano que ha modificado dr\u00e1sticamente la estructura del paisaje de orilla y terrestre adyacente.   los an\u00e1lisis se han realizado a partir de conjuntos de datos registrados a trav\u00e9s diferentes metodolog\u00edas de censo, siempre en funci\u00f3n de la escala de estudio y los objetivos concretos preestablecidos. Por lo general se han estudiado dos comunidades bien diferenciadas: invernante y estival. Se ha analizado tanto la respuesta global de la comunidad (estudiada a trav\u00e9s de \u00edndices biol\u00f3gicos), como el papel indicador de ciertas especies o gremios &quot;focales&quot; respecto a los factores y gradientes seleccionados.  entre los principales resultados obtenidos, se puede destacar c\u00f3mo la comunidad de aves acu\u00e1ticas se ve modificada cuando cambian las condiciones tr\u00f3ficas del sistema, por lo general, manifest\u00e1ndose en una banalizaci\u00f3n y p\u00e9rdida de valor de conservaci\u00f3n global de la comunidad. Esto se observa a diferentes escalas espaciales, desde peque\u00f1os humedales marginales al conjunto de la masa de agua de la laguna. No obstante, esta modificaci\u00f3n ocurre secuencialmente a trav\u00e9s de fases identificables con caracter\u00edsticas abi\u00f3ticas definidas. Adem\u00e1s, la respuesta de las especies a procesos locales (como la eutrofizaci\u00f3n) est\u00e1 mediada por las preferencias m\u00e1s generales en cuanto a la estructura del paisaje inmediato, la tolerancia al hombre y las estrategias de alimentaci\u00f3n y requerimientos tr\u00f3ficos. Es de destacar el importante papel que tiene los paisajes de orilla naturales y la primera franja de agua somera para la riqueza, diversidad y uso de aves acu\u00e1ticas.   estos estudios permiten ampliar el conocimiento de las implicaciones que tienen determinados factores antr\u00f3picos y\/o caracter\u00edsticas del paisaje sobre los sistemas lagunares y sus diferentes componentes, y contribuir de forma significativa a desarrollar modelos de evaluaci\u00f3n y gesti\u00f3n m\u00e1s eficientes. En este sentido parece necesario estandarizar y acoplar programas de monitoreo de determinados grupos biol\u00f3gicos (como las aves acu\u00e1ticas) con sistemas de gesti\u00f3n del territorio en distintas escalas (escala local, escala de paisaje). Este enfoque conjunto debe traducirse en el desarrollo de planes de gesti\u00f3n integral y sistemas de humedales (restaurados o creados) que permitan armonizar los objetivos de conservaci\u00f3n de la biodiversidad (por ejemplo, directivas de aves y h\u00e1bitats) con los objetivos de mantenimiento de la calidad de las aguas (directiva marco del agua).   waterbird community of mar menor lagoon (murcia, se spain): responses to functional processes, structural gradients and management applications  abstract mediterranean wetlands have historically been essential to human development because of the multiple services, direct and indirect, that they offer. They are ecosystems of high biodiversity, harboring many species of high ecological and conservation value. But despite of these values and services, wetlands are among the most threatened ecosystems in the world, in the case of coastal wetlands, mainly due to their natural fragility as representing input sinks and transitional environments, and to the intensive use that man has generally made of many of their resources (both biotic and abiotic).  this thesis deals with the study of mediterranean coastal wetlands and their associated biodiversity. Specifically, the set of studies described below were developed in the complex mar menor coastal lagoon-associated wetlands. In response to different specific objectives, we analyze the response or bioindicator role of the waterbird community, one of the taxocenoses of greatest ecological value, to different functional processes and to several natural or artificial structural gradients present in the lagoon, at different spatial and temporal scales. Among these processes we highlight on the one hand, the trophic change occurred in the water due to the discharge, in recent decades, of agricultural and urban effluents, causing a change in primary production, driving the system towards a state of eutrophication; and on the other hand, the intense urban development has dramatically changed the structure of the shoreline and adjacent inland landscapes.  the analyses were carried out using data sets recorded through different census methodologies, always depending on the scale of study and preset specific objectives. Usually, two distinct communities have been studied: winter and summer. Both the overall community response (studied through biological indices) and the indicator role of particular &quot;focal&quot; species or guilds, with respect to selected factors and gradients, have been studied.  among the main results, it is highlighted how the waterbird community is modified when the trophic conditions of the system change, usually being displayed in a trivialization and loss of global conservation value of the community. This is observed at different spatial scales from small marginal wetlands to the whole lagoon. However, this change occurs sequentially through recognizable stages with defined abiotic conditions. In addition, the response of species to local processes (such as eutrophication) is mediated by their more general preferences for the structure of the immediate landscape, their tolerance to man and their foraging strategies and trophic requirements. It should be highlighted the important role of natural terrestrial landscapes and the first strip of shallow water for the richness, diversity and waterbird use.  these studies can provide further insight into the implications of certain human factors and landscape features on the lagoon systems and their various components, and contribute significantly to develop more efficient models of assessment and management. Thus it seems necessary to standardize and implement monitoring programs of specific biological groups (such as waterbirds), coupled with land management systems at different scales (local, landscape scale). This joint approach should result in the development of comprehensive management plans and wetland systems (either restored or created), capable to harmonize the objectives of biodiversity conservation (e.G.
