El efecto de la melatonina sobre los odontoblastos podr\u00eda ser similar a su acci\u00f3n sobre los osteoblastos. La hidroxiapatita (ha) y el fosfato beta-tric\u00e1lcico (?-Tcp) son biocer\u00e1micas usadas como sustitutos \u00f3seos que, unidas a col\u00e1geno (c) como soporte, tienen unas cualidades osteoconductoras satisfactorias. El objetivo de nuestro estudio es evaluar la respuesta de la pulpa de molares de rata a la melatonina y a la mezcla ha\/?-Tcp\/c cuando se usan como agentes para la realizaci\u00f3n de protecciones pulpares directas y comparar sus efectos sobre la pulpa dental con el producido por el mta. Adem\u00e1s, queremos evaluar la acci\u00f3n antioxidante sist\u00e9mica de la melatonina administrada por v\u00eda oral, y su influencia sobre el efecto que el mta y la melatonina tienen sobre la pulpa dental cuando se usan como agentes para la realizaci\u00f3n de protecciones pulpares directas en molares de rata.  metodolog\u00eda se realizaron protecciones pulpares directas en los molares superiores de 28 ratas sprague dawley. Los grupos de estudio fueron: mta 30 d\u00edas, melatonina 30 d\u00edas, mta + melatonina administrada por v\u00eda oral (v.O.) 30 d\u00edas; melatonina + melatonina v.O. 30 d\u00edas, mta 60 d\u00edas, melatonina 60 d\u00edas, ha\/?-Tcp\/c 30 d\u00edas. En los grupos mta+ melatonina v.O. 30 d\u00edas y melatonina + melatonina v.O. 30 d\u00edas, se a\u00f1adi\u00f3 melatonina en el agua de bebida que los animales bebieron ad l\u00edbitum (10 mg \/ 100 ml). Despu\u00e9s del per\u00edodo de estudio, 30 \u00f3 60 d\u00edas seg\u00fan el grupo, los animales fueron sacrificados y se les extrajo 5 ml de sangre, los ri\u00f1ones y el h\u00edgado con el fin de evaluar el estr\u00e9s oxidativo por medio de sustancias reactivas al \u00e1cido tiobarbit\u00farico (tbars). Los fragmentos de maxilar que conten\u00edan los molares de estudio se prepararon para la evaluaci\u00f3n histol\u00f3gica. A partir de estas muestras, se determin\u00f3 el grado de inflamaci\u00f3n pulpar, el grado de necrosis pulpar, la presencia de puente dentinario y dentina reparativa en la c\u00e1mara pulpar, la presencia y la regularidad de la capa odontobl\u00e1stica y la presencia de fibrosis pulpar.  resultados no se observaron diferencias significativas entre los diferentes tratamientos en cuanto a grado de inflamaci\u00f3n (p=0,024), vitalidad pulpar (p=0,61) y fibrosis (p=0,194). Para la variable puente dentinario y dentina reparativa hubo diferencias significativas (p=0,002): el grupo mta 30 d\u00edas se asoci\u00f3 a presencia y el grupo ha\/?-Tcp\/c 30 d\u00edas se asoci\u00f3 a ausencia de puente dentinario y dentina reparativa. Para la variable capa odontobl\u00e1stica tambi\u00e9n hubo diferencias significativas entre los grupos (p=0,002): el grupo mta 30 d\u00edas se asoci\u00f3 a la presencia de una capa odontobl\u00e1stica regular, el grupo mta + melatonina v.O. 30 d\u00edas se asoci\u00f3 a la presencia de capa odontobl\u00e1stica ya sea regular o irregular, los grupos melatonina 60 d\u00edas y ha\/?-Tcp\/c 30 d\u00edas se asociaron significativamente a la ausencia de una capa odontobl\u00e1stica regular. en el an\u00e1lisis del estr\u00e9s oxidativo no se detectaron diferencias significativas entre los distintos grupos: plasma (p=0.799), ri\u00f1\u00f3n (p=0.130) e h\u00edgado (p=0.724).   conclusiones los efectos sobre la pulpa dental de la melatonina y ha\/?-Tcp\/c usados como materiales de recubrimiento pulpar son similares a los del mta cuando valoramos el grado de inflamaci\u00f3n, la vitalidad pulpar y la presencia de fibrosis pulpar.  el consumo de melatonina por v\u00eda oral no a\u00f1ade ning\u00fan efecto histol\u00f3gico al producido por el mta y la melatonina aplicados directamente sobre la pulpa dental. El nivel de estr\u00e9s oxidativo en plasma, ri\u00f1\u00f3n e h\u00edgado no se modifican en ninguno de los grupos por el consumo de melatonina en el agua de bebida.   abstract  objetive melatonin plays an essential role in the regulation of bone growth. The actions that melatonin exert on odontoblasts may be similar to action on osteoblasts. Hydroxyapatite (ha) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (?-Tcp) are bioceramics used as bone substitutes, which together with collagen (c) as support, have satisfactory osteoconductive qualities. The aim of this research was to evaluate pulp response to melatonin and to mixture ha\/?-Tcp\/c used for direct pulp capping and to evaluate the antioxidant effect of melatonin administered orally and its influence on dental pulp.  methods direct pulp capping was performed on the upper molars of 28 sprague-dawley rats. The study groups were: mta 30 days; melatonin 30 days; mta + melatonin taken orally 30 days; melatonin + melatonin taken orally 30 days; mta 60 days; melatonin 60 days;.Ha\/?-Tcp\/c 30 days. In the groups mta + melatonin taken orally 30 days and melatonin + melatonin taken orally 30 days, the animals drank water dosed with melatonin ad libitum (10 mg\/100 ml). After 30 or 60 days depend of the group, the animals were sacrificed and 5 ml of blood, the kidneys and liver were extracted in order to evaluate oxidative stress by means of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances testing (tbars), and fragments of the maxilla containing the study molars were prepared for histological evaluation. The degree of pulp inflammation, the degree of pulp necrosis, the presence of reparative dentin and dentin bridging the pulp chamber, the presence and regularity of the odontoblastic layer and the presence of pulp fibrosis were evaluated from these samples.  results no significant differences were found between the study groups for the histological variables degree of pulp inflammation (p=0,024), degree of pulp necrosis (p=0,61) and presence of pulp fibrosis (p=0,194).    there were significant differences for the histological variable presence of reparative dentin and dentin bridging the pulp chamber (p=0,002); group mta 30 days was associated to presence and group ha\/?-Tcp\/c 30 days was associated to ausence of reparative dentin and dentin bridging.
