M\u00e1s concretamente, las unidades estructurales que contienen carbonilos tiofuncionalizados est\u00e1n presentes en muchos compuestos biol\u00f3gicamente activos y\/o son importantes precursores para su s\u00edntesis. Por ello, han sido notables los esfuerzos realizados con el fin de desarrollar m\u00e9todos estereocontrolados para la preparaci\u00f3n de este tipo de unidades. Dos de las aproximaciones comunes implican, por un lado, las \u00c2\u00bf-sulfenilaciones de compuestos carbon\u00edlicos, y por otro lado, la adici\u00f3n conjugada de nucle\u00f3filos de azufre a aceptores de michael. Bas\u00e1ndose en estas estrategias se han desarrollado muchos protocolos que hoy en d\u00eda proporcionan acceso a compuestos carbon\u00edlicos tiofuncionalizados. Sin embargo, a pesar del progreso, en este contexto, todav\u00eda hay algunas limitaciones. Como por ejemplo, la ausencia de m\u00e9todos para acceder a compuestos \u00c2\u00bf,\u00edY-tioepoxicarbon\u00edlicos (tioep\u00f3xidos) de forma directa y estereocontrolada; asi como la escasez de protocolos para preparar tioles terciarios.
